Levi's Stadium construction accident takes life of Vacaville man

More than 900 workers are coordinating their efforts to build Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. The stadium is scheduled to open next summer, and with so many individuals and so much building material and machinery on the site, the likelihood of a serious injury is increased significantly. Sadly, a driver recently died on the Levi's Stadium site, and Cal/OSHA is investigating.

The 60-year-old Vacaville resident worked for Gerdau Ameristeel, and he was reportedly delivering rebar when a bundle of it fell on him. Santa Clara police arrived at the scene, confirmed that the man's death was an accident and turned the investigation over to Cal/OSHA.

This man's death marks the second fatal work accident on the Levi's Stadium construction site. Another worker died in June when he was struck by an elevator weight.

Given next summer's deadline for the stadium opening, a reporter for NBC Bay Area asked a director of the project if pressure to complete the job on time might have played a part in this most recent accident. The director responded with an "adamant no."

It remains to be seen, however, if all safety precautions were taken while unloading the rebar that took the man's life.

As for the construction accident back in June, Cal/OSHA decided not to fine or cite the elevator company whose elevator weight hit and killed the worker.

Huge construction projects require careful coordination on the ground to protect employees from serious injuries, but unfortunately the necessary precautions aren't always taken. After the heartbreaking loss of a work-related death, surviving family members should be aware of their available workers' compensation options.
