Custodian fatally injured on the job, university being sued

Some employment positions come with certain risks. With most positions, safety training is required to avoid an employee being injured on the job. Unfortunately, not everyone receives the proper safety training they need to perform certain job duties. This appears to be the case for one custodian in California.

The Cal OSHA has recently received a complaint from service workers representing the union at UC Berkeley. On April 7, a custodian at UC Berkeley fell 20 feet to his death. He had been up on a lift washing the window sills of the campus' auditorium. The news source does not mention exactly what caused the fall, but it was mentioned that he did not have adequate training to be on a lift.

The 45-year-old man had never received any type of safety training when he was provided the custodian job at the college campus. The washing of the window sills was not even part of his general duties as a custodian. Despite all of this, he was still assigned those tasks by his supervisor.

The family of the late custodian is now seeking damages in a wrongful death suit against UC Berkeley in California after he was fatally injured on the job. In addition, the family may be entitled to workers' compensation death benefits under California law. Both processes can be complex, and loved ones may benefit from understanding the process of filing a lawsuit and filing for death benefits as they grieve the loss of their loved one and attempt to make light of what has happened.
