Preventing workplace injuries by increasing farm safety

Agriculture is a vital part of the American economy, as well as the economy of California. Working farms are important, but employees are often subjected to a higher risk of workplace injuries. By enforcing safety standards and regulations, farms can lower the risk of workplace injuries and in turn, increase productivity.

There are several types of farms in the state of California. This includes livestock, plants and food. Even with the wide variety of farm types, one of the reasons for many injuries is workers hurrying to complete a task. Haste to plant a certain crop before a season changes, pressure to complete a specific job and other reasons can lead to a lack of caution and possible injury. There is also a chance for injury when a worker uses a piece of farm equipment for which they untrained to operate.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has certain safety regulations that every working farm must implement, no matter how large or small. Farm owners must provide proper training for all employees, including training for using any piece of equipment that a worker may be required to use in his or her job. As required by state law, most employers have to provide workers' compensation insurance in case of on-the-job injuries.

Preventing workplace injuries should be a top priority for employers and farm owners. In the unfortunate event of an injury or death, a worker/family has the right to file a claim for workers' compensation for medical treatment and lost wages. A professional case evaluation can reveal possible legal options if a claim is denied or not sufficient to meet the financial needs of the victim.
