Workplace injuries place health care employees at risk of illness

Cal/OSHA has fined Kaiser Foundation Hospitals for placing workers at risk for infectious diseases. The fine of $149,900 came after three custodial employees were stuck by needles that were in a biohazard box. These workers were placed at risk for workplace injuries because the box was overflowing, and the lid could not be properly secured. Consequently, the three employees were given medicine as a precautionary measure.

California authorities have certain safety measures in place that are designed to protect those who work at the care facilities from being endangered by blood-borne pathogens. Kaiser Foundation Hospitals was found to be in violation of five of these standards. It is reported that employees had to reach inside the receptacle in order to properly clean it.

Health care workers and those who are employed in these facilities face certain risks every day. However, employers must recognize these risks and take certain steps to eliminate unnecessary hazards. Any time an employee is injured due to workplace hazards, it is helpful to gain an understanding of one's right to compensation.

Employees have the right to a safe work environment and are typically entitled to workers' compensation if they suffer workplace injuries. It is not always to easy to obtain rightful benefits, but a lawyer can help an injured California victim and family secure the recovery that they deserve. Medical bills, lost wages and other expenses may be covered, and a case evaluation can determine what legal steps are necessary to file a successful claim or appeal.
