Increase in jobs, increase in workers' compensation claims

California is enjoying an increase in jobs across the state, which is great news for residents, but it has led to an increase in on-the-job injuries. At this point, the rate of workers' compensation claims in the state is higher than the national average. The reason for this increase is due to continued job availability in particularly hazardous industries.

In 2015, Sonoma Country saw an increase of 1,400 construction jobs; Solano had an increase of 1,200 construction jobs, and surrounding counties also saw a significant increase in the construction sector. Projections for 2016 assume that construction job numbers across the state will continue to increase. With a rise of jobs in a particularly hazardous sector, the number of job-related injuries is expected to rise as well.

The construction industry is a particularly hazardous for workers. Dangerous equipment, falling objects, malfunctioning tools and other safety concerns place those employed to work on construction sites at a higher risk for injury. While employers are responsible for making these sites as safe as possible, accidents do happen. Construction workers, particularly those new to the job, would benefit from a full explanation of their rights in case they are injured.

Whenever a California worker is injured on the job, he or she is eligible for workers' compensation benefits. Work accident victims may be compensated for medical expenses, lost wages and even vocational retraining if necessary. A lawyer experienced in workers' rights and the workers' compensation claims system can evaluate the case, help file a claim and even appeal a denied claim.
