Meat-grinder accident leaves worker with serious injury

Last month a worker in San Anselmo suffered a serious workplace injury at a local market. Initial reports indicated that the 28-year-old employee lost his arm in a meat-grinder accident, but that wasn't the case. His injuries were very severe, however, and he opted not to discuss an ongoing investigation of the accident.

As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health has a six-month timeframe to investigate work-related accidents. During that time, Cal-OSHA will determine whether or not any safety violations occurred.

A reporter from The Marin Independent Journal spoke with the man who was injured. The worker confirmed that his arm was not severed and that he was able to move his fingers, which is a good sign given the severity of the accident.

A woman who was in the market just after the incident described a scene of screaming and moaning, with employees at the store obviously shocked after witnessing the injury.

The injured man was initially taken to Marin General Hospital but later had to be taken by air to Stanford University Medical Center.

Such a workplace accident can leave an employee permanently disabled. In these cases, workers and their families need to be aware of their options for obtaining the maximum amount of workers' compensation.

By law California workers are entitled to workers' comp benefits, but the process of applying for benefits can be confusing. If you would like to learn more about what to do after a workplace accident, then our San Jose work injury site is a good place to start.
