It’s no secret that California’s workers’ compensation system can be a daunting and stressful thing to confront. When people are at their most vulnerable after a work-related accident, they have to deal with administrative red tape that often seems like it’s meant to curb financial costs rather than help patients in need of treatment.

Workers who have been injured on the job often need legal assistance to get the full amount of due compensation and the right medical care, and since this month is Pain Awareness Month, it’s a perfectly good time to talk about the chronic pain injured workers experience and how those individuals and their families might get some relief.

First, let’s consider some numbers. It’s been reported that more than 100 million Americans suffer chronic pain, so Californians whose injuries keep them from working need not feel alone.

In fact, a 2011 report from the Institute of Medicine shows that chronic pain in the United States leads to lost productivity and medical treatment estimated to cost $635 billion. Chronic pain is also the main cause for long-term disability and missed work time.

Unfortunately, after a workplace injury, a person’s medical treatment is often left up to the decisions made in the workers’ comp system. This situation can leave injured workers feeling helpless while administrative decisions are made about their personal health.

Meanwhile, not only is the physical pain an obstacle; workers often experience stress and anxiety because the idea of their health is presented to them like a secondary concern.

Injured workers and their families deserve the full measure of compensation after an on-the-job injury. What they do not deserve is an administrative runaround.
