Construction workers injured on the job after hotel fire

Several California firefighters were injured on the job after a large fire at a landmark hotel in San Fransisco. The hotel was undergoing construction and renovation when it caught fire. Cal/OSHA is investigating the fire after seven construction workers were injured on the job and sent to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The three-alarm fire may have been caused by some of the construction work that is underway at the hotel. Cal/OHSA says that the two construction companies working at the hotel at the time of the fire were Emerald Steel and Pacific Structures, both of which are California-based businesses. When the blaze stared, workers were welding. It is possible that the welding work could have sparked the fire.

Cal/OSHA can levy fines against either company if it is found that a lack of safety, failure to follow protocol or negligence contributed to the accident. The investigation will include looking into the safety records of both companies to determine if either have a record of similar incidents. They will also interview the injured workers and others on the scene to determine what happened.

The construction workers who were injured on the job could be eligible for workers' compensation benefits. Workers' compensation differs from state to state and is typically granted to cover the cost of medical treatment and at least a portion of lost wages when a worker is injured on the job. These seven workers may be eligible to receive these benefits, but it is important for all workers to understand the terms and conditions of their individual coverage.
