High voltage line accident leads to on-the-job injury and deaths

High voltage lines pose a significant risk for on-the-job injury to industrial and construction workers, even with highly trained individuals. Recent accidents in California involving electrical hazards have resulted in a full investigation by Cal/OSHA and, ultimately, citations and fines for two companies. Cal/OSHA typically investigates accidents that result in on-the-job injury or fatalities.

Two recent accidents involving high voltage lines left two people dead and one with serious injuries. It was discovered that a lack of safety played a significant role in both incidents. It is possible that additional training and preparation could have prevented the tragic work accidents.

Both accidents involved workers who were electrocuted while working on a boom lift or scaffolding. One worker was killed after coming in contact with a 12,000 volt electrical line, and another died after contact with a 66,000 volt line. California law requires employers to provide training, identity potential hazards and allow workers to perform their jobs in a safe environment. After these fatal accidents, the families of the deceased workers are likely entitled to workers' compensation death benefits.

When a worker suffers an on-the-job injury or is killed on the job, the injured party or family has the right to file a workers' compensation claim. Medical bills, lost wages and other financial losses -- such as funeral and burial costs -- may be covered, but claimants may find it difficult to navigate the claims process alone. A workers' compensation attorney may be the best choice for individuals who have suffered from a work accident and are unsure of what to do next.
