For those injured on the job, help may be hard to find

California workers who have been injured at work may find that it is difficult to secure compensation and assistance. Every worker has the right to seek a complete physical and financial recovery after a work accident, but changes within the workers' compensation system have made that more difficult. Those injured on the job will find it particularly beneficial to secure legal assistance after an accident.

According to studies done by several organizations, cuts to the workers' compensation system in many areas of the country have had a detrimental impact on injured workers. In many cases, it is more difficult to qualify for benefits, get medical care and secure money needed to cover expenses. With many employers paying for lower rates of workers' compensation insurance, the financial burden of an accident is being carried by victims and families.

It has been noted that employers generally pay about 20 percent of the overall cost of a work accident. The director of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration believes that employers would take drastic steps to decrease work accidents if they had more financial responsibility to injured workers. The study found that one-third of injured workers in California who required hospitalization did not receive any financial benefits.

If injured on the job, workers may be entitled to financial support to cover the cost of medical care, rehabilitation, lost wages from missed work and vocational retraining. It can be difficult to secure these deserved benefits, but injured workers can fight for what they need with the support of a workers' compensation lawyer. A full evaluation of the individual situation can reveal how to proceed with various legal options.
