Workplace accidents: Worker killed while replacing guardrails

On Behalf of | Apr 17, 2015 | Workplace Accidents |

Construction workers who work along busy California roads are constantly exposed to an array of safety hazards. In many cases of workplace accidents in construction zones, workers are injured or even killed by motorists, but it is not uncommon for construction vehicles on site to cause injuries or deaths to other workers. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is currently investigating a fatal accident in a construction zone in another state.

According to an accident report, a 43-year-old worker was killed in a work-related accident on a recent Thursday. The worker was reportedly in the process of replacing a section of guardrail that had been damaged in an earlier vehicle accident. A vehicle belonging to the construction company allegedly backed up and the driver failed to see the worker who was behind the vehicle. The truck knocked the worker down and rolled over him, causing fatal injuries.

Despite OSHA’s requirement for construction companies to comply with its safety regulations, accidents do occur all too often. Hazards that workers are exposed to include scaffolding accidents and other falls from heights, electrical shocks and trench collapses. Survivors of such accidents may end up with catastrophic injuries such as brain injuries, burn injuries and back injuries that may impact the remainder of their lives.

Along with having to cope with life-changing injuries or the death of loved ones in workplace accidents, victims or family members will be faced with high medical and/or end-of-life expenses. In addition, the lack of income may cause further financial difficulties. Fortunately, the aim of the California workers’ compensation insurance fund is to provide financial relief for victims and surviving family members. Claims for benefits may be pursued for compensation to enable families to meet day to day living expenses and settle medical and/or end-of-life expenses.
