A worker was recently taken to the hospital after suffering a serious injury while working on Mare Island. California authorities are investigating the accident after being notified of the incident. The man who was injured while working was taken to a local trauma center for medical treatment, but the state of his condition is not immediately known.
The accident occurred when a steel beam fell from its cradle. The report states that the man was crushed by the I-beam, with the his legs taking most of the impact. Working on industrial jobs comes with a certain risk of injury, but even industrial workers and those employed in hazardous jobs have the right to a reasonably safe job environment.
While it is not known what led to the accident, California workers have the right to medical care and financial compensation after suffering an injury on the job. Workers’ compensation benefits typically covers medical expenses, lost wages from missed work and even rehabilitation expenses. If an injured worker is unable to return to the same job, he or she has generally the right to vocational retraining.
If injured while working, it is important to act quickly to secure deserved benefits. Filing a workers’ compensation claim can be a complex process, and the system is constantly changing. Successfully navigating the compensation system may require the assistance of a lawyer who is experienced in workers’ rights and employment law. After an accident, a worker can act as his or her own advocate by seeking a legal opinion regarding potential legal options.
