California theme park employee injured while working

The California theme park Great America Park has been fined by the California Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for unsafe practices that led to the injury of a park mechanic. The fine of $70,200 was issued after a man was seriously injured while working. He was hit by a train in a restricted area. Working as a mechanic on a ride, he was trying to retrieve a phone that had fallen in a restricted area.

According to Cal/OSHA, Cedar Fair Southwest, the company that owns and operates the ride, is to blame for a lack of safety standards in place. The ride should have been shut down before an employee was allowed in the restricted area. Eight violations were found concerning the theme park operator, including five that could place workers at serious risk for injury or death.

California employers have a responsibility to keep workers as safe as possible. Safety measures should always be in place and properly enforced by management. Employers must train employees on how to prevent injuries on the job and provide any safety equipment needed. This particular theme park has been cited in the past for negligent safety training and other violations of safety standards.

When a person is injured while working, there are benefits and support available to ensure that medical needs are covered and lost wages are compensated. In order to secure rightful benefits available through workers' compensation, it is beneficial to have the assistance of an experienced attorney. Any injured worker has the right to gain an understanding of his or her rights and entitlements and to pursue claims for relief through the compensation system.
