Health care employees at risk for workplace injuries

California readers know that health care workers are often exposed to hazardous conditions. Despite the inherent risks of the profession, some health care employers fail to protect their workers as much as they should. Just recently, a hospital was cited for certain hazards that placed employees at risk for workplace injuries.

In this particular case, the hospital was found to be guilty of various hazards that placed everyone in danger. Some of these dangers included failure to provide safe containers for used needles, broken gurneys left in the open and more. It was also learned that the health care system did not effectively train employees to provide proper, safe patient care. The company that runs and manages the California hospital is accused of violating the bloodborne pathogens standard.

Health care employees may assume that these hazards are unfortunate, yet unavoidable, risks that come with working in this particular industry. While fraught with certain risks, those who work with sick people should be properly trained and provided with the safest, cleanest work place possible. When injuries do occur or hazards are identified, employers should move to eliminate the risk of the accident happening again.

It is unacceptable when employers do not place a proper value on the health and safety of their workers. No individual should face an increased risk of workplace injuries just because of negligence or lack of concern. When a person is injured on the job, he or she is entitled to medical care and other benefits available through workers' compensation.
