Measures may reduce on-the-job injury for health care workers

Health care workers face a number of risks every day. From violent patients to exposure to dangerous diseases, these workers deserve to have a work environment that is as safe as possible. Some workers are pushing for new measures that would reduce their risks of on-the-job injury. California nurses are rallying for approval of these new measures, which would implement a bill that was passed last year.

Those who are employed in the health care sector are five times more likely to face an assault or violent act than those employed in other areas. New regulations would include threats of violence in the official definition of workplace violence. By properly training employees to recognize signs of violence and deal with these incidents effectively, the number of assaults and accidents can be reduced. The new measures also include ways to identify risks, implement proper procedures and correct hazards that could lead to violence.

Just like every other employee in the state of California, health care workers have the right to a safe and productive workplace. Employers are responsible for recognizing hazards and correcting them as well as training workers to handle violent situations. If these measures do pass, it could mean a safer work environment for every hardworking doctor, nurse and care provider.

Workers' compensation also covers any on-the-job injury sustained in incidents of workplace violence or assault. Those who have been harmed at work have the right to a full and fair recovery, which can be obtained with a workers' compensation claim. A lawyer can help an injured worker understand his or her options and properly complete and file a claim.
