On-the-job injury: increasing safety can increase productivity

California workers have the right to a safe work environment. Few would argue this right, but few employers and managers consider how increasing workplace safety can actually increase the productivity of workers. Many workers fear violence in the workplace, and without realizing it, allow this fear to impact their productivity. Essentially, alleviating fears of on-the-job injury related to violence could be better for everyone, including the employer's bottom line.

A researcher and successful entrepreneur recently published his findings regarding the mental state of the workforce in general. He says that workers are stressed and anxious over the possibility of workplace violence, and these fears are exacerbated by the seemingly constant media coverage of violence in the workplace. In turn, workers are unable to fully focus on the task at hand.

Besides working to reduce threats of violence, employers should have a clear plan in case an unsafe situation occurs. Proactive steps, such as safety programs, will help employees feel safe and build awareness. Of course, employers should work to eliminate other hazards such as dangerous machinery, outdated safety equipment and other concerns. Workers who are safe and well-trained will be less likely to suffer an on-the-job injury.

When an on-the-job injury does occur, a California worker has the right to seek compensation for his or her expenses and financial losses. No matter why an injury occurred, whether it is from an accident or a violent incident, workers should take steps to legally protect their entitlements. An experienced lawyer can advise any worker and family about appropriate legal options.
