Brush-clearing crewmember killed in fatal work-related accident

On Behalf of | Mar 28, 2019 | High Risk Occupations |

Services that are conducted to keep California safe are necessary for the overall well-being of its residents. Although there are certain jobs that are considered riskier than others such as law enforcement, construction and firefighters, there is danger with any job, especially to those on a cleanup crew. Accidents with injuries and fatalities can happen instantly and without warning. People who have lost a loved one in a fatal work-related accident will have a litany of issues to get beyond. To maximize compensation, legal help is beneficial.

A 57-year-old man who was working on a crew clearing brush was killed when a log rolled down the hill and hit him. He was crushed in the incident. The accident occurred in the mid-morning after 10 a.m. Emergency responders rushed to the scene. The man was being helped by others on the crew. After emergency crews arrived, the man was declared dead. He had worked for the public works as a maintenance crew member since 2007. He became a permanent worker the next year. The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA) is one of the agencies investigating the incident.

No matter the kind of work a person does, a family is not expecting to receive a phone call or a knock at the door telling them that their loved one has died in a fatal work accident. However, the death of a worker in the course of employment can happen in any kind of job. Physical jobs and employment where people must put themselves in a position where there is a chance of an accident are obviously at greater risk, but it can happen to anyone.

The lost income, lost companionship and emotional impact can be extensive and difficult to get beyond. There will be funeral expenses and other costs associated with an unexpected occurrence such as a fatal work accident. To know what one’s options are and to ensure one is adequately compensated, it can be helpful to speak to an experienced attorney. While many injuries happen in high risk occupations, this is not always the case and all injured employees should know they have the right to file for workers’ compensation.
