Subcontractor fined by OSHA after man injured on the job dies

A subcontractor at the San Francisco 49ers stadium has recently been handed down significant fines due to safety violations that reportedly contributed to a worker's untimely death. The worker died back in October when some of the building materials fell and resulting in him being injured on the job. Apparently, a load of rebar fell off one of the delivery trucks at the work site and crushed him in the process. He suffered serious injuries to his head and succumbed to those injuries following the California work accident.

The steel subcontractor received three violations. Two of these violations were considered serious and one was classified as general. He will now have to pay a fine of more than $36,000 for these three violations combined. OSHA's investigation of the accident found that the forklift operator was unable to see where the victim was standing because of obscured sight lines. They also found that the rebar had not been properly secured during the unloading process, which likely resulted in the rebar dislodging and falling off the bed of the truck.

This was the second death that the 49ers stadium had in 2013. Another man lost his life when a counterweight struck his head as he was working in the elevator shaft. At that time, the contractor did not receive any citations, but did receive a $54,000 fine at a later date.

An accident like this is one that all California businesses may want to keep in mind, as it is proof there are consequences when workers are not kept safe on the job. When workers are injured on the job, they are entitled to workers' compensation benefits, which can help financially until they can return to work. For families of workers who have died as a result of an on-the-job injury, death benefits may be available.
