Vallejo police investigate death of surveyor on construction site

On Behalf of | Oct 8, 2013 | Construction Workers' Accidents |

Each day workers throughout California face the risk of serious injuries on construction sites. When construction site injuries happen, workers or their families may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. Such benefits can be used to cover medical expenses, lost wages and, when necessary, funeral expenses.

Sadly, a recent accident on Mare Island took a worker’s life. Vallejo police and Cal/OSHA have begun investigating the accident, which involved a Caterpillar scraper truck that hit a man surveying the site.

According to police, the 51-year-old surveyor was working with another crew member as the scraper approached. The driver attempted a U-turn but didn’t see the surveyor, who was knocked to the ground. The driver reportedly got down from the scraper and called for help.

After medical responders arrived, the injured man was pronounced deceased. He was a Newark resident who worked for KDW Construction, based in Vacaville.

A news report doesn’t say whether the driver of the scraper was employed by the same company. In cases in which a worker for another company causes a fatal accident on a construction site, a claim of wrongful death may be the appropriate course of legal action.

Unfortunately, some employers and insurance companies will try to deny workers’ compensation benefits to injured workers or their families. Or a third party will have its own insurance company and attorneys whose job it is to reduce or deny payouts to victims of work-related accidents.

In these cases, it is important that people seeking compensation after a workplace injury are aware of the full range of legal options for covering medical bills and other costs arising out of the accident.
