Supervisors who oversee landscapers, groundskeepers and lawn workers have just over 20 fatal accidents per 100,000 full-time workers. The highest number of these accidents occur when workers are traveling from one site to another. Supervisors in construction and extraction work have 21 fatalities per 100,000 workers. These workers are also most commonly killed in transportation accidents. Along with the high number of transportation accidents, other common causes of fatal accidents included slipping, tripping, falling and being hit by equipment and objects.
Iron and steel workers had 23.6 deaths for every 100,000 workers. There were only 15 fatalities in this industry in the latest statistics, but fewer people do this work, so they are on the list. Falls are the most common reason for death in this industry. Those who work on farms and in agriculture had 24.7 fatalities for every 100,000 workers. They are often killed when traveling from one location to another. Truckers and drivers or sales workers are also on the list, with 26 workers killed per 100,000 workers.
Trash collectors had 44.3 fatalities per 100,000 workers. Roofers also have a high fatality rate with 51.5 workers dying for every 100,000 working in the industry. Just shy of 60 flight engineers and pilots died for every 100,000 workers.
Fishing workers had 77.4 deaths for every 100,000 workers. Again, the main cause of these deaths was transportation accidents. Finally, loggers had almost 100 deaths for every 100,000 workers. This is the most dangerous job in the nation, with a 28 times greater chance of being killed on the job than the average fatality rate of 3.5 per 100,000 workers.
