Car smashes into Trader Joe’s — 4 employees injured on the job

| Dec 8, 2013 | Workplace Injuries |

Trader Joe’s offers healthy food at affordable prices to California consumers. The grocery chain also serves as the employer to countless California residents. Normally, one would not consider Trader Joe’s to be a dangerous workplace where numerous employees are getting injured on the job; however, a recent accident proved that truly anything can happen.

On Friday, Dec. 8, a motor vehicle crashed into a Trader Joe’s location in Oceanside. Nine people were injured, and one shopper was pinned under the vehicle’s wheels and up against a wall. Of the injured, four of them were Trader Joe’s employees.

The white vehicle was buried beneath store merchandise that toppled over in the crash. Firefighters extricated one individual who was pinned against a wall by the car. A witness reported that injured victims were taken out of the store on stretchers. The driver was injured as well, bringing the total of injured people to 11.

This California incident, involving people who were injured on the job, is particularly unique because it was caused by a woman who drove into a store. Employee-victims of this accident who were working at the time, will likely be eligible to pursue workers’ compensation benefits to pay for medical care and time spent out of work while recovering. Victims, regardless of whether they are employees of Trader Joe’s, may also be entitled to pursue a personal injury claim against the woman who apparently caused the accident. Depending on the facts of the case and the extent of their injuries, employees could be eligible to pursue both types of claims.
