Construction worker suffers fatal on-the-job injury after fall

As any California construction worker knows, many risks come with the job. There are numerous hazards at construction sites that workers face on a day-to-day basis. Those who work on scaffolding high above the ground are especially vulnerable to serious or even fatal on-the-job injury. Sadly, a construction worker here on the West Coast recently died after falling approximately 50 feet as he was attempting to move to another part of the scaffolding at a building site.

The accident occurred on the morning of Jan. 6 as the 31-year-old welder was on his first day of the job. According to eyewitness accounts, he unhooked his safety harness so he could move to another area on the scaffold. That is when he reportedly stumbled over a welder and fell. The man later died from his injuries at a local hospital.

The work site was closed for the rest of the day as investigators examined the area and took photographs. According to reports, the construction site had been investigated in November after a complaint was made regarding inadequate fall protection; however, no violations were found. The company developing the project released a statement indicating that it was cooperating with the investigation into this accident.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, the worker's family may need financial assistance to compensate them for funeral expenses and lost wages. In California, workers' compensation offers death benefits to dependent family members of a worker who dies from an on-the-job injury. Family members may find it beneficial to speak to someone familiar with the workers' compensation laws in our state. This may help ensure that they get all the benefits they are entitled to receive with a minimal amount of stress.
