Grieving family could claim workers' compensation benefits

When someone is killed on the job, there is little that can be done to alleviate the distress and emotional suffering that can follow. However, a grieving family may be able to secure workers' compensation death benefits that can help them effectively navigate the financial matters that are at hand. These benefits may include funeral costs, lost wages and more.

A recent fatal work accident in California serves as a sober reminder of the importance of these benefits. A 50-year-old worker was killed after he fell from a truck, simultaneously pulling a pile of wood down on top of him. He was using a pallet jack to move wood from a box truck to a semi truck at the time of the accident.

This accident is still under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Most employees and their family members are eligible for workers' compensation benefits, no matter the circumstances of the accident or the outcome of an OSHA investigation. It is important for an accident victim or beneficiaries to act quickly to protect their entitlements after an accident.

Workers' compensation cannot undo the damage that has been done in a fatal workplace accident, but it can go a long way toward recovery and establishing a stable future for those who have been left behind. One of the first steps that a California family can take after the work-related death of a loved one is to contact a lawyer experienced in workers' rights and benefits. From filing a benefits claim to dealing with insurance adjusters, no step of this process has to be faced alone
